2008 Trip to Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur

TUESDAY 14 OCTOBER 2008 After landing at LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal), there was a huge crowd at immigration and we groaned. However, unlike the USA, there is no interrogation, no photos, no fingerprinting, nor do we sign away our rights to enter the country so the lines moved quite quickly. Half an hour later we were on the kerb getting into a cab. TUESDAY 14 OCTOBER 2008 On the way into our hotel, le Meridien at KL Sentral, we arranged with our cab driver to meet us on Thursday and take us to the Cameron Highlands. The price negotiated was RM800. That afternoon, a heavy rain storm swamped the area. TUESDAY 14 OCTOBER 2008 It affected the traffic below our hotel. We had a great corner room on the 26th floor. That night, we had a huge, absolutely wonderful meal at the hotel - easily the best of the trip. WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 Next morning, we caught the monorail to Bukit Bintang intending to have breakfast and shop for some small items.
WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 It was just after 10:00 when we crossed over to the Times Square shopping centre. In typical Asian style, this place is huge. It has two indoor theme parks (one for children) a bowling alley and multiple movie theatres. WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 The shopping area spreads across ten floors. As on previous trips to Malaysia, the top floors were unoccupied. WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 While Jenni continued window shopping at Times Square, I went back to Bukit Bintang and thought this was an amazing contrast: a single remaining slum type building contrasted against the modernity of the KL Tower. WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 The shop I visited was the Low Yat Plaza, a boy's toys area full of computer and communications stuff. When comparing prices, KL is really no cheaper than Australia but it's still an interesting place to wander around. I found that the purveyors of pirated DVDs and software had been cleaned out.
WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 The next place that used to be good for indiscriminate people to buy pirated software was Sungei Wang Plaza. It too had been cleaned out. WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 After the huge meal that we'd had at the hotel last night, we decided to buy something light and take it back to the hotel. Here we join the monorail at Bukit Bintang for the ride back. WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 Back at the hotel we can see many of the attractions of KL. The blue-domed building is the planetarium and behind that is Dayabumi Complex. WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 Our room was great although the internet was not free.
WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 After a rest, we decided to catch the train to KLCC. WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 The courtyard of KLCC shows more completed buildings in the area. This is what it looked like on my October 2005 trip - exactly three years ago. WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 To me, the Petronas Twin Towers is a triumph of art and engineering. It's even more magnificent at night and I rate it as the most beautiful building ever crafted by the hand of man.
WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 In what became a daily feature of our trip to Malaysia, a heavy downpour arrived. WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 We were intending to catch the train back to our hotel but the storm had disrupted the service. WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 When it rains in Malaysia, it really rains. WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 With our transport back not available, we decided to wait out the storm by having dinner at Chilli's in KLCC.
WEDNESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2008 It didn't stop raining, so we caught a cab back. Instead of about 7 minutes in the train, we spent ¾ hour stuck in a ghastly, worn out old Proton with the meter ticking away. No wonder there was so little competition to catch a cab.
