Once again, Stoner dominated all FP sessions and qualifying and took his seventh pole in a row. Rossi was second on the grid with Lorenzo third. After the red lights went out, Stoner blazed away to the front followed by Pedrosa who started brilliantly. Rossi dropped to third closely followed by De Puniet (14), Lorenzo (48) and Elias (24).
During lap 2 Rossi passed Pedrosa and took off after Stoner. Lorenzo had settled into third. After two laps, Stoner had a lead of 2 seconds. About Rossi's helmet: Rossi's home was only 10km away in Tuvullia so the red squares on his helmet are the roof tiles of his house and the rest of the helmet shows the walls and the garden.
Over the next few laps Stoner built his lead to three seconds with Rossi sometimes faster and Stoner taking it back again. However, once again Stoner pushed too hard, lost the front and crashed out of the race on lap 8 which gifted the lead and the win to Rossi. It was his third crash in three races and his second DNF trying to respond to Rossi's pressure.
On lap 8, Elias passed Pedrosa to take third. Although Michelin provided competitive tyres for this round, Pedrosa, Repsol and HRC had all had enough. After the race HRC announced that Pedrosa would race on Bridgestone tyres for the rest of the 2008 season. He did this to gain experience with Bridgestones and to be fully competitive for the 2009 season.
Misano was one of the two remaining tracks on which Valentino had not won. His win here also made him equal with Giacomo Agostini on the number of senior category GP wins. Stoner's crash gifted second spot to Lorenzo who pushed Rossi all the way to the finish line. With the track invaded by thousands of mad Italians, a victory celebration with Agostini was not possible.
Rossi had increased his lead in the championship to 75 points over Stoner. Points were now Rossi 262, Stoner 187, Pedrosa 185 with Lorenzo a long way back on 140. A very popular third place went to Tony Elias who finally seemed to be coming to grips with the Ducati.
