Day 9 - 40th Anniversary trip to NZ - Homeward bound The alarm wakes us at 03:00. We shower and drive to airport where we leave the car. Day 9 - 40th Anniversary trip to NZ - Homeward bound We didn't write down the starting Kms but it was around 1500 Kms of very easy, courteous driving. Actually, after driving in Sydney, anywhere else seems easy. Day 9 - 40th Anniversary trip to NZ - Homeward bound The bit in between is without a doubt the worst flight I’ve ever had. It is a codeshare Airbus A320 small passenger jet and it's fully booked. The whole plane is cattle class; the 168 seats are jammed tightly with no leg room and the airline has even reduced the number of toilets to squeeze more people in. And there are crying babies as well. Day 9 - 40th Anniversary trip to NZ - Homeward bound The flight is 3’ 15” of misery. To add insult to injury, there is no meal or refreshment service. To add even more insult to injury, the airline is too mean to pay for an aero bridge (several were vacant) so it parks the plane on the tarmac at Sydney and we have to jam tightly into a bus to get to the terminal. Misery. If this is international travel nowadays then I’ve had my last flight. Nah, this can’t be right. The trip over to Christchurch was with Emirates and it was normal, although a huge $20 more.
Day 9 - 40th Anniversary trip to NZ - Homeward bound We catch the train to Central, change at Central and get another train to Hornsby where Yvonne picks us up. This is the end an adventure that, for me, had quite a few depressing aspects. Then again, the highs were very high. The car was fantastic as was Jenni’s driving; she drove every single kilometre and I never got in the driver’s side at all – not even to park it. The NZ people? The world’s friendliest and most helpful. End of the adventure Return to the home page
