Thursday, 9 March 2023 Sussie had to work in the office today, so I tagged along...these are just some of the luxury apartments on the waterfront at Rue du Dr Zamenhof, Cannes. Thursday, 9 March 2023 On the waterfront at Pointe Croisette, Cannes. Hotel Martinez is a really beautiful building & apparently one of those 'in' places to stay. Thursday, 9 March 2023 Hotel Martinez...art deco style, opened in February 1929...occupied by various military during WW2 & now owned by the Hyatt group. Thursday, 9 March 2023 Intricate lacework, Hotel Martinez
Thursday, 9 March 2023 I caught Le Petit Train; it stops at Notre Dame de L'Esperance so tourists can walk around & take in the lovely views. Looking to the NW of Cannes, over part of Le Suquet (Old Town), from Place de la Castre. Thursday, 9 March 2023 Luxury yachts & local fishing boats moored at Port du Cannes Thursday, 9 March 2023 Èglise Notre-Dame de L'Espèrance; a hilltop Gothic-style stone church completed in 1627 after more than a century of work. It features a Renaissance porch & a square Romanesque bell tower & has been an historical monument since 1937. I love the trees...think they are Maritime Pines. Thursday, 9 March 2023 A better view of the bell tower. I think the "Cannes" sign is lighted at night.
Thursday, 9 March 2023 Looking down over part of Le Suquet & the waterfront from the viewpoint at Place de la Castre. The Hotel de Ville (mayor's office) is in the centre of this photo. Thursday, 9 March 2023 The centre building must be about the width of Jeff's workshop...such a tiny home! Thursday, 9 March 2023 I'd never noticed this garden before...it belongs to the church, not that the kitty cat snuggled in the rosemary (lower right) cares. Thursday, 9 March 2023 Funny story...I'd seen these larger birds flying around & asked Sussie what they were? Seagulls she replied. Can't be, said I. Then this gull posed for me...she wuz right, again. The gull, with red eye, yellow beak and red under jaw, is called the yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis). "It is a large gull found in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, that has recently achieved wide recognition as a distinct species."
Thursday, 9 March 2023 These stairs lead to the garden below. Thursday, 9 March 2023 Beautiful pottery adorns the gate posts leading to the garden. Thursday, 9 March 2023 The Hotel Splendid is right on the waterfront at Cannes. Thursday, 9 March 2023 I took this & the previous picture from the Cannes Flea and Antique market fountain.
Thursday, 9 March 2023 I'm inside the Marché Forville. It is an indoor market that sells local produce & flowers, seafood, cheese and more. It wasn't too busy because it's late in the day for the market, about 1:15pm. Still lots of delicious offerings available. Thursday, 9 March 2023 A bit south of the markets, I discover the alley of Rue Meynadier in Cannes. It sells "low cost" items. Thursday, 9 March 2023 I decided to try the "Formule" lunch at a little deli; 11Euros for this delicious lunch...steamed endive wrapped in ham & coated in bechamel sauce, baked & served with spinach & beans, salad, bread & strawberry mousse. Sussie later told me that this is a very typical Provencal lunch. Thursday, 9 March 2023
Thursday, 9 March 2023 Looking down Rue Emile Négrin towards the waterfront. Thursday, 9 March 2023 From the end of the Jetee Albert Eduoard, looking up to the Eglise Notre Dame de L'Esperance. Behind me is the Casino & the Auditorium Luois Lumiere where the Cannes Film Festival happens every May. Thursday, 9 March 2023 Thursday, 9 March 2023
Thursday, 9 March 2023 I wander east along the Bd de la Croisette, taking a slow walk towards Sussie's office. The beaches are being readied for summer. During the summer season, many of the hotels set up restaurants & cafes on the beaches...I guess one of those places to be seen. Thursday, 9 March 2023 . . . such as the 4½ star Carlton Hotel. Apparently, this hotel is the choice of royalty, ultra-rich & movie stars. Pity about all the construction hoardings; Sussie said it's been going on for ages but hopefully finished before summer. Thursday, 9 March 2023 . Thursday, 9 March 2023 The beaches look pretty ordinary now but in summer, you can barely see the sand for people.
Thursday, 9 March 2023 During my slow walk, I took advantage of the empty blue chairs & pretended to be a local. In summer, blue chairs are everywhere Thursday, 9 March 2023 I had to kill some time, so what better thing to do than to treat myself to an Expresso Martini at 72 Croisette...the kind waiter took my picture. It was luscious. Thursday, 9 March 2023 Google photos created this magic panorama of Cannes for me!! Thursday, 9 March 2023 Looking back to Cannes from near Port Canto & the Square du 8 Mai 1945 (also known as Les Jardins de la Roseraie).
Thursday, 9 March 2023 According to tourist myth, the shape of the towers on the Carlton Hotel are based on the breasts of the architect's mistress :-) Thursday, 9 March 2023 Moody sun at Port Canto, just outside Sussie's office Thursday, 9 March 2023 Sussie & her little deisel BMW (this car replaced her much beloved BMW Series 1 Convertible that was destroyed in the 2015 flood). Thursday, 9 March 2023 Sussie is a great cook...looking right at home in her new kitchen (mostly finished the day before I arrived).
Thursday, 9 March 2023 Sussie has booked us a room for our forthcoming trip to Neive in Italy
