The gloomy black residences Numbers 10 and 11 Downing Street, homes of the PM Margaret Thatcher and the Chancellor of the Exchequer. When I was here in 1973, you could walk up to the front door. Number 10 is approximately 3⁄4 mile (1.2 km) from Buckingham Palace and near the Palace of Westminster, the meeting place of both Houses of Parliament.
