2 Front row was Stoner, Rossi and Vermeulen. Stoner and Rossi maintained first and second for the whole race and Vermeulen finished a lowly eighth. There were two main stories for this round: Casey Stoner was back to his imperious best - after improving the Ducati's electronics at post race testing at Mugello - and . . .
3 . . . James Toseland crashing out on the first corner of the first lap. James had high expectations of himself, as did the British crowd , that they might have their first GP winner since Barry Sheene in 1977. He remounted and, with a badly damaged bike, bravely finished the race in last place. He was lapped by every other rider. Toseland started the weekend badly by crashing twice in the final moments of qualifying and starting from 16th on the grid.
4 The only excitement during the race was the close battle for second with Rossi and Pedrosa overtaking each other several times. Three laps from the end, Pedrosa realised he couldn't beat Rossi so he backed off and settled for a safe third. Stoner was a runaway winner easing off over the last two laps to win by 5.8 seconds.
5 Rossi extended his championship lead over Pedrosa by four points but Casey had passed Lorenzo and was now third. Lorenzo's confidence was shattered by the huge crashes he had suffered but he still managed to finish sixth after starting 17th. Championship points were now Rossi 162, Pedrosa 151, Stoner 117.
