Jorge Lorenzo had yet another big crash during practice on Friday and the concussion he suffered kept him in hospital and away from the track for the duration.
Rossi had his bike painted in the Italian national football team's colours. His helmet was decorated to represent a soccer ball and the pink on his leathers was supposed to be the pink of the footballer's arms.
Valentino qualified only ninth. Stoner had pole with Pedrosa in second. Here, those two are long gone. Nicky Hayden was the other front row starter and he's already dropped back to fifth (he finished eighth). Melandri is temporarily in front of Rossi, but after three laps, he was back in 14th.
The perennial backmarkers. Melandri (33) and the two Kawasakis of Hopkins (27) and Anthony West (13). Chris Vermeulen (7) started seventh and finished seventh, respectable but not outstanding.
On lap 9, Rossi passed Colin Edwards (5) Dovizioso (who had been in second) and Casey Stoner to take second place. Pedrosa was by now 6.6 seconds in front.
Rossi set off after Pedrosa but Pedrosa was cruising. On lap 17 Stoner overtook Rossi but Rossi waited until two laps before the end and passed Stoner again to take second. Dovizioso (4) could not keep up the pace but still finished a respectable fourth.
Pedrosa had won his second home GP. Rossi still led the championship on 142 points with Pedrosa in second on 135. Lorenzo's non start held him at 94 points while Stoner's podium brought him to within two points of Lorenzo in the championship chase.
