In 1882 Italian immigrants, most of them survivors of the ill-fated De Rays Expedition, took up a conditional purchase farm of 40 acres (160,000 m²) near Woodburn and later named it New Italy. The de Rays Expedition, was a New Guinea expedition of Marquis de Rays, a French nobleman who attempted to start a colony in the South Pacific.
