2020 Far North Queensland
After breakfast in Taree, we head north and drive 371 kms to New Italy for a rest break. This building is a recreation of the mud-brick original that once stood on the site. In 1882 Italian immigrants, most of them survivors of the ill-fated De Rays Expedition, took up a conditional purchase farm of 40 acres (160,000 m²) near Woodburn and later named it New Italy. The de Rays Expedition, was a New Guinea expedition of Marquis de Rays, a French nobleman who attempted to start a colony in the South Pacific. This Museum presents the history of Italian migration to Australia and the memorabilia from the New Italy settlement. The New Italy settlers built mud brick houses, a church, school and community hall in traditional style of northern Italy. This picture is inside the café.
For lunch we have some pretty ordinary hamburgers. Next stop is Joan and Rogers at Wynnum West, a suburb of Brisbane. There is a 1hr 20min delay to get through the border. People still told lies and received Police fines of $1,000. 2029-07-13FNQld-2
