On top of the plateau is a shaft into the now-closed (1992) Coalcliff mine. It became one of the largest underground and longest-lived mines [in Australia], remaining in production for 114 years. Around the time of its closure, the mined coal emerging at Coalcliff was coming underground from as far away as Darkes Forest 9 kms distant."
