2 Valentino qualified on pole, his first in nearly a year. Pedrosa, who qualified second led into the first corner and sped away from the pack. Stoner qualified fourth but was second into turn 1. By the end of the first lap, Valentino was in third after dropping as low as fifth.
3 Lorenzo (48) qualified in seventh but had a bad weekend; he crashed on lap 7. Capirossi (65) was the other front row starter.
4 Valentino overtook Pedrosa on lap 3 and Stoner on lap 4. It was a contest for a while but Rossi opened a three second gap and maintained it until the end.
5 Valentino recorded his third win in a row and his seventh in a row at Mugello. He also had a special, very humourous helmet created for his home GP.
6 The Italian crowd went crazy with Valentino's win and invaded the track while bikes were still circulating. Stoner was second with Pedrosa third. Rossi now had a comfortable lead in the championship with 122 points to Pedrosa's 110 points. Lorenzo maintained third after crashing on lap 7. Stoner closed the gap with 76 points, ironically 46 points behind Rossi.
