We stayed overnight at Monroe about 1 hour's drive from Kelly Whitely's place. Kelly kindly offered us accommodation at her apartment for the next couple of days. We now do a walking tour of the city.

Our first port of call is the Pike Place Markets, a public market overlooking the Elliott Bay waterfront. The Market opened August 17, 1907, and is one of the oldest continually operated public farmers' markets in the United States.

These prices look cheap to me. An interesting aside is that at the Pike's Place market, every fish market employee in every venue wears the Grunden brand. Grunden is a local company that specialises in heavy duty weather gear.

A 1.6-mile streetcar service along Alaskan Way began in 1982. City Councilman George Benson travelled to Melbourne, Australia, to negotiate the purchase of the 1920s-vintage wood-paneled cars. The line was later extended a ½ mile to Union Station.
